Leaves the basin (this site, evaporated)—
Capacity ≈ watershed area × regional runoff (modeled renewable supply). The basin total sums every mapped + modeled data center in this HUC-8. "Leaves" = cooling water evaporated and not returned here; the water embedded in electricity is consumed at distant power plants. Ignores inter-basin transfers and groundwater recharge.

Where the water goes
— consumed (evaporated)— returned
Water isn't destroyed — but water that evaporates here rains down elsewhere, a real loss to this basin. For scale: agriculture is ~70% of U.S. freshwater use and all data centers ~0.3–0.4% nationally — but the draw is locally concentrated.

*Footprint figures are modeled estimates (power × climate-adjusted cooling WUE + grid-mix electricity water intensity), not metered. For announced sites the quoted MW is total facility power, so cooling is modeled on ~62% of it as IT load (PUE ≈ 1.6) while electricity water is modeled on the full draw — the two intentionally use different denominators. Operational MW comes from colocation listings, which already quote critical IT load, so no PUE step is applied there. Building area is derived from IT load, not reported. Sites whose MW is on-site generation capacity are flagged in the drawer and get no modeled cooling water. Watershed & drought pulled live from USGS & the U.S. Drought Monitor. Facility locations are real coordinates from PeeringDB & OpenStreetMap.
